✧ Māʿiz b. Mālik came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He said: Woe to you, go back and seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him. He said: He went back not far, then came and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He said to him the like of that, until when it was the fourth time, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: From what should I purify you? He said: From adultery. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Is he insane? He was told that he was not insane. He said: Smell him. A man stood and smelled him, and found no smell of wine. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Did you commit adultery? He said: Yes. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to be stoned. The people were divided about him: some said he perished with the worst of his deeds and his sin encompassed him; others said no repentance is better than the repentance of one who came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, placed his hand in his hand, then said: Kill me with stones. They remained like that for two or three days until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came while they were sitting, greeted, then sat and said: Seek forgiveness for Māʿiz b. Mālik. They said: May Allah forgive Māʿiz. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He has repented with a repentance that if divided among a nation would suffice them. Then a woman from Ghāmid of the Azd came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He said: Go back, seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him. She said: I see you want to send me back as you sent back Māʿiz b. Mālik? He said: From what should I purify you? She said: She is pregnant from adultery. He said: Did you commit adultery? She said: Yes. He said: Then I will not stone you until you give birth to what is in your womb. A man from the Ansar sponsored her until she gave birth. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: The Ghāmidiyyah has given birth. He said: Then I will not stone her and leave her child small with no one to nurse him. A man from the Ansar stood and said: I will nurse him, O Messenger of Allah. So he stoned her.
