حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ قَالَ: نَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ قَالَ: نَا مُعْتَمِرٌ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ هِلَالٍ، أَخِي بَنِي مُرَّةَ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ:
أَعْوَزْنَا عَوْزًا شَدِيدًا، فَأَمَرَنِي أَهْلِي أَنْ آتِيَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَسْأَلَهُ شَيْئًا، فَأَقْبَلْتُ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَا سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى أَغْنَاهُ اللهُ، وَمَنِ اسْتَعَفَّ أَعَفَّهُ اللهُ، وَمَنْ سَأَلَنَا لَمْ نَدَّخِرْ عَنْهُ شَيْئًا إِنْ وَجَدْنَا، فَقُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي: لَأَسْتَغْنِيَنَّ فَيُغْنِيَنِي اللهُ، وَلَأَتَعَفَّفَنَّ فَيُعِفَّنِي اللهُ، فَلَمْ أَسْأَلِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ شَيْئًا
Translation

✧ We were in severe need. My family told me to go to the Prophet ﷺ and ask him for something. So I went, and the first thing I heard the Prophet ﷺ say was: "Whoever seeks to be self-sufficient, Allah will enrich him. Whoever seeks chastity, Allah will keep him chaste. And whoever asks us, we will not withhold anything from him if we find it." So I said to myself: I will certainly seek self-sufficiency and Allah will enrich me, and I will certainly seek chastity and Allah will keep me chaste. And I did not ask the Prophet ﷺ for anything.
