He says: "I was performing the circumambulation when two girls approached. One of them clung to the curtains of the Kaaba and said: [Metre: al-Ṭawīl] Has the girl no share, Lord, while estrangement lies between her and the one she loves, of union? I performed the pilgrimage, and not because of any evil I had done, but to be tormented over the one who cut the bond. I gave my mind away in love of him while I was young; now my years have grown old, so return my mind to me through him. Otherwise, make the love equal between him and me, for You, my Master, are described with justice. He said: So I cried out to her and said: Woe to you! Is verse like this said to God, Mighty and Majestic? She said: Leave me, O Dhū al-Nūn! If the All-Aware had shown you what is in the heart, you would have had mercy on the one you have set apart at Marw, the house of the other. Then she said: O Dhū al-Nūn, I will tell you something more wondrous than this. Then she began to recite: [Metre: al-Ṭawīl] I was patient, and patience had its consequence; and is there any grief that befalls me for which I should grieve? I was patient over what, if the mountains of Murūdī bore part of it, they would crack apart. I mastered the tears of my eye and then sent them back to my sight, so the eye weeps into the heart. I said: Over what, girl? She said: Over a calamity that struck me, which has never struck anyone. I said: And what is this calamity? She said: O Dhū al-Nūn, I had two cubs playing before me, and their father had sacrificed two rams. One said to his brother: Little brother, shall I show you how our father sacrificed his ram? One of them lay down and the other took a knife and slaughtered him, and the killer fled. Their father came in and I said: Your son killed his brother and fled. He went out in search of him and found that a beast of prey had devoured him. The father returned and died on the road of thirst and hunger. And I had a small child, and I was cooking a pot and was inattentive to him, and the pot fell upon him and he died burned. Dhū al-Nūn said: I have never heard of anything more wondrous than that."
