أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ الْفَضْلِ, نا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ, نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَفَّانَ, نا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ, عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ, حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ, عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ,
قَالَتْ: أَتَى أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ بَابَ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَوَجَدَهُ مُغْلَقًا, فَقَالَ: " مَنْ أَتَى بَابَ السُّلْطَانِ يَقُومُ وَيَقْعُدُ, وَمَنْ يَجِدْ بَابًا مُغْلَقًا يَجِدْ عِنْدَهُ بَابًا فُتِحَ إِنْ سَأَلَ أُعْطِيَ, وَإِنِ اسْتَغْفَرَ غُفِرَ لَهُ ", قَالَتْ: وَكَانَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ اسْتَعَانُوا بِهِ عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ, لِيُكَلِّمَهُ أَنْ يُخَفَّفَ عَنْهُمْ مِنَ الْخَرَاجِ, قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا يُؤْذَنْ لَهُ, قَالَ: " أَنْتُمْ أَظْلَمُ مِنْهُ ", قَالُوا: لِمَ أَصْلَحَكَ اللهُ؟ قَالَ: " لَوْ شِئْتُمْ أَسْلَمْتُمْ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ عَلَيْكُمْ سَبِيلٌ "

She said: A man from the People of the Covenant (ahl al-dhimmah) had been sought as an intercessor with Muʿāwiyah, to speak to him so that he would lighten the land tax (kharāj) for them. She said: When he was not given permission to enter, he said: "You are more unjust than he." They said: Why, may Allah set you right? He said: "If you wished, you would accept Islam, and then he would have no way over you."
