"The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he rushed out, dragging his cloak until he came to the masjid. He continued leading us in prayer until the eclipse ended. When it ended, he said: 'People claim that the eclipse of the sun and moon only happen when a great man dies, but that is not so. Eclipses of the sun and the moon do not happen for the death or birth of anyone, but they are signs from Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime. When Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, manifests Himself to anything of His creation, it humbles itself before Him, so if you see that then pray like the last obligatory prayer you did before that.'"

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationAbū Qilābah did not hear from al-Nuʿmān, and the hadith is mursal (mursal).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationHe explicitly stated that this hadith is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486
  • Ibn Abī Ḥatim

machine translationHe declared it defective (muʿall) on account of a break in the chain (inqiṭāʿ).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486

machine translationThis addition is not authentic in transmission, so whoever transmits it must be declared mistaken.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486

  • Ibn al-Qayyim

machine translationThere is no objection to the chain of this narration, and its narrators are trustworthy (thiqāt) and reliable memorizers (ḥuffāẓ). However, perhaps this wording is an interpolation (mudraj) in the hadith, taken from the words of some of the narrators.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis is a mursal report (mursal): Abū Qilābah did not hear it from al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr; he only narrated it from a man, from al-Nuʿmān, and it does not contain this last wording.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationOn this topic, among what he did not mention, there is a report from Jābir in Muslim, and he mentioned several routes, and from al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr in al-Nasāʾī and others. So these are several routes, most of which meet the conditions of authenticity (ṣiḥḥah).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 1486
