أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ نَوْفَلِ بْنِ مُسَاحِقٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عِصَامٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا بَعَثَ جَيْشًا أَوْ سَرِيَّةً قَالَ لَهُمْ «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ مَسْجِدًا أَوْ سَمِعْتُمْ مُؤَذِّنًا فَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَحَدًا فَبَعَثَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي سَرِيَّةً فَأَمَرَنَا بِذَلِكَ فَخَرَجْنَا نَسِيرُ فِي أَرْضِ تِهَامَةَ فَأَدْرَكْنَا رَجُلًا يَسُوقُ ظَعَائِنَ فَعَرَضْنَا عَلَيْهِ الْإِسْلَامَ فَقُلْنَا أَمُسْلِمٌ أَنْتَ» فَقَالَ «وَمَا الْإِسْلَامُ؟ فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ لَا يَعْرِفُهُ» قَالَ «فَإِنْ لَمْ أَفْعَلْ فَمَا أَنْتُمْ صَانِعُونَ؟» قُلْنَا «نَقْتُلُكَ» قَالَ «فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَظِرِيَّ حَتَّى أُدْرِكَ الظَّعَائِنَ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ وَنَحْنُ مُدْرِكُوكَ فَخَرَجَ فَأَتَى امْرَأَةً وَهِيَ فِي هَوْدَجِهَا فَقَالَ أَسْلِمِي حُبَيْشُ قَبْلَ انْقِطَاعِ الْعَيْشِ أَسْلِمِي عَشْرًا وَثَمَانِيًا تَتْرَى وَتِسْعًا وِتْرًا ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَتَذْكُرْنَ إِذْ طَالَعْتُكُمْ فَوَجَدْتُكُمْ بِحِلْيَةٍ أَوْ أَدْرَكْتُكُمْ بِالْخَوَانِقِ أَلَمْ يَكُ حَقًّا أَنْ يَنُولَ عَاشِقٌ تَكَلَّفَ إِدْلَاجَ السُّرَى وَالْوَدَائِقِ فَلَا ذَنْبَ لِي قَدْ» قُلْتُ إِذْ أَهَلْنَا مَعًا أَثِيبِي بِوَصْلٍ قَبْلَ إِحْدَى الصَّفَائِقِ أَثِيبِي بِوَصْلٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَشْحَطَ النَّوَى وَيَنْأَى الْأَمِيرُ بِالْحَبِيبِ الْمُفَارِقِ ثُمَّ أَتَانَا فَقَالَ «شَأْنُكُمْ فَقَدَّمْنَاهُ فَضَرَبْنَا عُنُقَهُ فَنَزَلَتِ الْأُخْرَى عَلَيْهِ مِنْ هَوْدَجِهَا فَحَنَتْ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ»

✧ Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army or a secret expedition, he said to them: "If you see a mosque or hear a muezzin, do not kill anyone." The Prophet ﷺ sent us in a secret expedition and commanded us with that. We set out traveling in the land of Tihamah, and we overtook a man driving women in howdahs. We offered him Islam and said: "Are you a Muslim?" He said: "And what is Islam?" We told him, and he did not know it. He said: "If I do not do it, what will you do?" We said: "We will kill you." He said: "Will you wait for me until I reach the women?" We said: "Yes, and we will catch you." He went and came to a woman in her howdah and said: "Accept Islam, Hubaysh, before life is cut off. Accept Islam ten and eight successively and nine odd." Then he said: "Do you remember when I looked at you and found you in adornment, or caught up with you at Khawanq? Was it not right that a lover should attain, who undertook the night journey of forced marches and the saddle girths? I have no sin. I said when we camped together: Reward me with union before one of the misfortunes. Reward me with union before separation tears apart and the commander takes away the beloved departing." Then he came to us and said: "It is your affair." So we brought him forward and struck his neck. The other woman came down from her howdah and bent over him until she died.
