✧ The Prophet ﷺ sent ten men as a secret expedition for reconnaissance, and he appointed over them 'Asim b. Thabit al-Ansari, the grandfather of 'Asim b. 'Umar b. al-Khattab. They set out until they were at al-Hudah, which is between 'Usfan and Makkah. They were mentioned to a tribe of Hudhayl called Banu Lihyan, and about a hundred archers set out against them. They tracked their traces until they found their food: dates they had taken as provision from Madinah. They followed their traces. When 'Asim and his companions saw them, they took refuge on a mound, and the people surrounded them. They said to them: "Come down and give us your hands, and you have the covenant and pledge that none of you will be killed." 'Asim b. Thabit, the commander of the expedition, said: "As for me, by Allah, I will not come down today under the protection of a disbeliever. O Allah, inform Your Prophet ﷺ about us." They shot them with arrows and killed 'Asim along with seven. Then three men came down to them under the covenant and pledge, among them Khubayb al-Ansari, Ibn Dathinah, and another man. When they had control over them, they untied the strings of their bows and bound them. The third man said: "This is the first act of treachery. By Allah, I will not accompany you." They dragged him and struggled with him, but he refused to accompany them, so they killed him. They took Khubayb and Ibn Dathinah and sold them in Makkah after the Battle of Badr. Banu al-Harith b. 'Amir b. Nawfal b. 'Abd Manaf purchased Khubayb, and Khubayb was the one who had killed al-Harith b. 'Amir on the day of Badr. Khubayb remained with them as a captive [124]. 'Ubayd Allah b. 'Iyad informed me that the daughter of al-Harith told him that when they gathered, he borrowed a razor from her to shave his pubic hair, and she lent it to him. She said: "A young son of mine crept away while I was heedless until he came to him. I found him sitting on his thigh with the razor in his hand. I was alarmed, and Khubayb recognized the alarm in my face. He said: 'Do you fear that I will kill him? I would never do that.'" She said: "By Allah, I have never seen a captive better than Khubayb. One day I found him eating from a bunch of grapes in his hand while he was bound in iron, and there was no fruit in Makkah. She used to say: 'It was provision from Allah that He provided to Khubayb.'" When they took him out of the sanctuary to kill him outside it, Khubayb said to them: "Let me pray two rak'ahs." They left him, and he prayed two rak'ahs. Then he said: "Were it not that you would think I am afraid, I would have added more. O Allah, count them one by one. [al-Bahr al-Tawil] And I do not care, when I am killed as a Muslim, on which side my fall is for Allah. And that is in the essence of God, and if He wills, He blesses the joints of a torn apart body." Then Abu Sirwa'ah 'Uqbah b. al-Harith stood up to him and killed him. Khubayb was the one who established the two rak'ahs for every Muslim killed patiently. And Allah ﷻ responded to 'Asim b. Thabit on the day he was struck, and the Prophet ﷺ informed his companions of their news on the day they were struck. Some men from the disbelievers of Quraysh sent to 'Asim when they were told that he had been killed, to bring something of him by which he would be recognized, for he had killed a man of their great ones on the day of Badr. Allah sent upon 'Asim something like a cloud of hornets, and they protected him from their messenger, so he was not able to cut anything from his flesh.
