✧ I heard Abu Hurayra say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expedition and summoned them. He began to ask each man: "How much of the Qur'an do you have with you, O so-and-so?" He replied: "Such and such." He questioned them all until he came to a man among them who was the youngest of them. He said: "What do you have with you, O so-and-so?" He said: "Such and such, and Surat al-Baqara." The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Do you have Surat al-Baqara?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Go, for you are their commander." A man from their nobles said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, nothing prevented me from learning the Qur'an except fear that I might sleep and not get up with it." The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Learn the Qur'an, recite it, and sleep. The example of the Qur'an for one who learns it, recites it, and stands with it is like a bag stuffed with musk, whose fragrance spreads everywhere. And the example of one who learns it but sleeps while it is in his heart is like a bag tied over musk." Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Ishaq b. Abd al-Wahid I do not know, and Abd Allah b. Abd al-Samad has narrated to us from al-Mu'afa b. 'Imran more than one hadith. We only included it because of his insertion between him and Mu'afa. Others besides Abd al-Hamid b. Ja'far narrated it but made it mursal, and the well-known version is mursal.
