✧ On the day of Hunayn, the Muslims and the polytheists met, and the Muslims turned in flight that day. I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ with no one with him except Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. ʿAbd al-Muttalib, holding the Prophet’s ﷺ saddle-strap, not slackening in speed towards the polytheists. I came to him and took his bridle while he was on his grey mule, and he said, “O ʿAbbas, call the companions of the samura tree.” I was a man with a loud voice, so I called at the top of my voice: “Where are the companions of the samura tree?” They came as if they were camels yearning for their young, saying, “At your service, at your service.” The polytheists advanced, and they and the Muslims met. The Ansar called out, “O company of the Ansar.” Then the call was shortened to Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, and they called, “O Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj.” The Prophet ﷺ looked on from his mule, as if craning towards their fight, and said, “Now the battle has grown hot.” Then he took some pebbles in his hand and threw them at them, then said, “They are routed, by the Lord of the Kaʿba.” By God, I never stopped seeing their affair retreating and their edge blunted until God routed them. It is as if I am looking at the Prophet ﷺ galloping after them on his mule.
