✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ when the Ghāmidī woman from Azd came to him and said: O Messenger of God, I have committed adultery. He turned her away. She said: O Messenger of God, do you want to turn me away as you turned away Māʿiz? By God, I am now pregnant. He said: "Go away until you give birth." Then she came and said: I have given birth, O Messenger of God. He said: "Go away until you wean him." So she weaned him. Then she came with him, and in his hand was a piece of bread that he was eating. She said: I have weaned him, and here he is eating. The Messenger of God ﷺ handed him over to a man among the Muslims. Then he ordered them, and they dug a pit for her up to her chest. Then he ordered his companions, and they stoned her. Khālid b. al-Walīd threw a stone at her, and some of her blood spattered onto Khālid's cloak, and he cursed her. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "Do not curse her, O Khālid; for she has repented with such a repentance that if a tax collector repented with it, God would accept his repentance." Then he ordered concerning her, and she was shrouded, and then he prayed over her. Bashīr said: Ibn Buraydah narrated to me from his father, who said: We, the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ, used to say: If Māʿiz and this woman had not confessed on the fourth time, the Messenger of God ﷺ would not have pursued them.
