أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الصُّوفِيُّ كُوفِيٌّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَشِيرُ بْنُ مُهَاجِرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَجَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ زَنَيْتُ وَإِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ تُطَهِّرَنِي فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «ارْجِعِي» فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ أَتَتْهُ فَاعْتَرَفَتْ عِنْدَهُ بِالزِّنَا فَقَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ طَهِّرْنِي لَعَلَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَرُدَّنِي كَمَا رَدَدْتَ مَاعِزَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ فَوَاللهِ إِنِّي لَحُبْلَى فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «ارْجِعِي حَتَّى تَلِدِي» فَلَمَّا وَلَدَتْ جَاءَتْهُ بِالصَّبِيِّ تَحْمِلُهُ فِي خِرْقَةٍ فَقَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ هَذَا قَدْ وَلَدْتُ قَالَ «فَاذْهَبِي فَأَرْضِعِيهِ حَتَّى تَفْطِمِيهِ» فَلَمَّا فَطَمَتْهُ جَاءَتْ بِالصَّبِيِّ فِي يَدِهِ كِسْرَةَ خُبْزٍ فَقَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ هَذَا قَدْ فَطَمْتُهُ فَأَمَرَ بِالصَّبِيِّ فَدَفَعَهُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَحَفَرَ لَهَا حُفْرَةً فَجُعِلَتْ فِيهَا إِلَى صَدْرِهَا ثُمَّ أَمْرَ النَّاسَ أَنْ يَرْجُمُوهَا فَأَقْبَلَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بِحَجَرٍ فَرَمَاهَا فَانْتَضَحَ الدَّمُ عَلَى وَجْهِ خَالِدٍ أَوْ جَبْهَتِهِ فَسَبَّهَا فَسَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سَبَّهُ إِيَّاهَا فَقَالَ «مَهْلًا يَا خَالِدُ لَا تَسُبَّهَا فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ تَابَتْ تَوْبَةً لَوْ تَابَهَا صَاحِبُ مَكْسٍ لَقُبِلَ مِنْهُ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَكُفِّنَتْ وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَدُفِنَتْ»

✧ I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when a woman came to him and said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed adultery and I want you to purify me.” The Prophet ﷺ said to her, “Go back.” The next day she came to him and confessed adultery before him, saying, “O Prophet of Allah, purify me. Perhaps you want to turn me away as you turned away Ma‘iz b. Malik. By Allah, I am pregnant.” The Prophet ﷺ said to her, “Go back until you give birth.” When she gave birth, she brought the child to him, carrying it in a rag, and said, “O Prophet of Allah, this one I have given birth to.” He said, “Go and nurse him until you wean him.” When she had weaned him, she came with the child, in his hand a piece of bread, and said, “O Prophet of Allah, this one I have weaned.” So he ordered the child to be given to a man among the Muslims, and he ordered concerning her that a pit be dug for her. She was placed in it up to her chest. Then he ordered the people to stone her. Khalid b. al-Walid came forward with a stone and threw it at her, and blood spattered on Khalid’s face or forehead. He cursed her, and the Prophet ﷺ heard him cursing her. He said, “Gently, O Khalid! Do not curse her, for by the One in whose hand is my soul, she has repented with such a repentance that if a tax collector repented with it, it would be accepted from him.” Then he ordered concerning her, and she was shrouded, and he prayed over her, and she was buried.
