أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا حَازِمٍ يَقُولُ

سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ إِنِّي لَفِي الْقَوْمِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَامَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَسَكَتَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِشَيْءٍ ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «هَلْ مَعَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ شَيْئًا» فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ «هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ «قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

✧ I heard Sahl b. Sa'd say: 'I was among the people with the Prophet ﷺ when a woman stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, she has given herself to you, so decide about her as you see fit." The Prophet ﷺ remained silent and did not answer her at all. Then she stood again and said: "O Messenger of Allah, she has given herself to you, so decide about her as you see fit." A man stood up and said: "Marry her to me, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do you have anything with you?" He said: "No." He said: "Go and look for something." He went and searched, then came back and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not find anything." He said: "Go and look, even if it is an iron ring." He went and searched, then came back and said: "I did not find anything, not even an iron ring." He said: "Do you have anything of the Qur'an with you?" He said: "Yes, with me is such-and-such a surah and such-and-such a surah." He said: "I have married you to her for what you have of the Qur'an."'
