أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الزُّهْرِيَّ الْإِسْكَنْدَرَانِيَّ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ جِئْتُ لِأَهَبَ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْضِ فِيهَا شَيْئًا جَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا قَالَ «انْظُرْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَلَا خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي قَالَ سَهْلٌ مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا فِيهِ شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ فِيهِ شَيْءٌ» فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ «مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا عَدَّدَهَا قَالَ «تَقْرَأُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبِكَ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

✧ A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have come to give myself to you.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at her, raising his gaze to her and lowering it, then he lowered his head. When the woman saw that he did not decide anything regarding her, she sat down. Then a man from his companions stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her, marry her to me.' He said: 'Do you have anything?' He said: 'No, by Allah, I found nothing.' He said: 'Look, even if it is an iron ring.' He went and returned and said: 'No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, not even an iron ring, but this waist-wrapper of mine.' Sahl said: 'He had no upper garment.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What will you do with your waist-wrapper? If you wear it, she will have nothing of it, and if she wears it, you will have nothing of it.' The man sat down until his sitting became long, then he stood up. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him turning away, so he ordered that he be called. When he came, he said: 'What do you have of the Qur'an?' He said: 'With me are such-and-such a surah and such-and-such a surah,' counting them. He said: 'Do you recite them by heart?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I have given her to you in marriage for what you have of the Qur'an.'
