أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ يَقُولُ
خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ أَصَابَ النَّاسَ فِيهِ شِدَّةٌ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُهُ لِأَصْحَابِهِ {لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} [المنافقون 7] مِنْ حَوْلِهِ وَقَالَ {لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ} [المنافقون 8] قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ ذَلِكَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أُبَيٍّ فَسَأَلَهُ فَاجْتَهَدَ يَمِينَهُ مَا فَعَلَ قَالُوا كَذَبَ زَيْدٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مِمَّا قَالُوا شِدَّةٌ حَتَّى أَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ تَصْدِيقِي فِي {إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ} [المنافقون 1] قَالَ وَدَعَاهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِيَسْتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ فَلَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ

✧ We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey in which the people suffered hardship. ʿAbdullāh b. Ubayy said—while I heard him—to his companions: “Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God until they disperse” [63:7] from around him, and he said: “If we return to Madinah, the more honorable will surely expel the more humble from it” [63:8]. He said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him that. He sent for ʿAbdullāh b. Ubayy and asked him, but he swore earnestly that he had not done it. They said: “Zayd lied to the Messenger of God ﷺ.” I felt great distress at what they said, until God sent down my vindication in “When the hypocrites come to you” [63:1]. He said: The Prophet ﷺ called them to seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away.
