أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيِّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ
كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ {لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ} [المنافقون 8] فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَحَلَفَ عَبْدُ اللهِ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ شَيْئًا وَلَامَنِي قَوْمِي وَقَالُوا مَا أَرَدْتَ إِلَى هَذَا؟ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ أَنْزَلَ عُذْرَكَ» فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} [المنافقون 7] حَتَّى بَلَغَ {لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ} [المنافقون 8]

✧ I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the expedition to Tabūk. ʿAbdullāh b. Ubayy said: “If we return to Madinah, the more honorable will surely expel the more humble from it” [63:8]. I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him. ʿAbdullāh swore that he had not said anything, and my people blamed me, saying: “What did you intend by this?” The Messenger of God ﷺ sent for me and said: “God has sent down your excuse.” Then this verse was revealed: “Those who say, ‘Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God until they disperse’” [63:7], until he reached: “If we return to Madinah, the more honorable will surely expel the more humble from it” [63:8].
