أَخْبَرَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي يُوسُفُ بْنُ مَاهَكَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَعِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ جَاءَهَا عِرَاقِيٌّ فَقَالَ أَيْ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَرِينِي مُصْحَفَكِ قَالَتْ «لِمَ؟» قَالَ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُؤَلِّفَ عَلَيْهِ الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّا نَقْرَأُهُ عِنْدَنَا غَيْرَ مُؤَلَّفٍ قَالَتْ
وَيْحَكَ وَمَا يَضُرُّكَ أَيَّهُ قَرَأْتَ قَبْلُ إِنَّمَا نَزَلَتْ أَوَّلَ مَا نَزَلَ سُورَةٌ مِنَ الْمُفَصَّلِ فِيهَا ذِكْرُ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ حَتَّى إِذَا ثَابَ النَّاسُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ نَزَلَ الْحَلَالُ وَالْحَرَامُ وَلَوْ نَزَلَ أَوَّلُ شَيْءٍ لَا تَشْرَبُوا الْخَمْرَ قَالُوا لَا نَدَعُ شُرْبَ الْخَمْرِ وَلَوْ نَزَلَ أَوَّلُ شَيْءٍ لَا تَزْنُوا لَقَالُوا لَا نَدَعُ الزِّنَا وَإِنَّهُ أُنْزِلَتْ {وَالسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَى وَأَمَرُّ} [القمر 46] بِمَكَّةَ وَإِنِّي جَارِيَةٌ أَلْعَبُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ وَمَا نَزَلَتْ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ إِلَّا وَأَنَا عِنْدَهُ قَالَ فَأَخْرَجْتُ إِلَيْهِ الْمُصْحَفَ فَأَمْلَتْ عَلَيْهِ السُّوَرَ

✧ Woe to you! And what does it harm you which you recited before? The first thing to be revealed was a surah from the Mufaṣṣal in which there is mention of Paradise and Hell. Then, when the people had become settled in Islam, the lawful and the unlawful were revealed. If the first thing revealed had been “Do not drink wine,” they would have said, “We will never give up drinking wine.” If the first thing revealed had been “Do not commit adultery,” they would have said, “We will never give up adultery.” And it was revealed {and the Hour is more calamitous and more bitter} [al-Qamar: 46] in Makkah, while I was a young girl playing around Muḥammad ﷺ. And Sūrat al-Baqarah was not revealed except while I was with him. He said: So I brought out the muṣḥaf to him and she dictated the surahs to him.
