أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمٌ عَنْ يَزِيدَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَلَمَةَ بْنَ الْأَكْوَعِ يَقُولُ خَرَجْتُ قَبْلَ
أَنْ يُؤَذِّنَ بِالْأُولَى وَكَانَتْ لِقَاحُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِذِي قَرَدٍ فَلَقِيَنِي غُلَامٌ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ فَقَالَ أُخِذَتْ لِقَاحُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قُلْتُ مَنْ أَخَذَهَا؟ قَالَ غَطَفَانُ فَصَرَخْتُ ثَلَاثَ صَرَخَاتٍ يَا صَبَاحَاهْ فَأَسْمَعْتُ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ ثُمَّ انْدَفَعْتُ عَلَى وَجْهِي حَتَّى أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ وَقَدْ أَخَذُوا يَسْتَقُونَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَجَعَلْتُ أَرْمِيهِمْ بِنَبْلِي وَكُنْتُ رَامِيًا وَأَقُولُ [البحر الرجز] أَنَا ابْنُ الْأَكْوَعِ وَالْيَوْمُ يَوْمُ الرُّضَّعِ [359] ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ كَلَامًا مَعْنَاهُ وَارْتَجَزَ حَتَّى اسْتَنْقَذْتُ اللِّقَاحَ مِنْهُمْ وَاسْتَلَبْتُ مِنْهُمْ ثَلَاثِينَ بُرْدَةً قَالَ وَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ فَقُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ قَدْ مَنَعْتُ الْقَوْمَ الْمَاءَ وَهُمْ عِطَاشٌ فَابْعَثِ السَّاعَةَ فَقَالَ «يَا ابْنَ الْأَكْوَعِ مَلَكْتَ فَأَسْجِحْ» ثُمَّ رَجَعْنَا

✧ …to give the first call to prayer. The milch camels of the Messenger of God ﷺ were at Dhu Qarad. A servant of ‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Awf met me and said, “The milch camels of the Messenger of God ﷺ have been taken!” I said, “Who took them?” He said, “Ghatafan.” I shouted three times, “O morning raid!” and made it heard between the two lava tracts of Madinah. Then I rushed forward until I caught up with them while they had started drawing water. I began shooting at them with my arrows—I was an archer—and saying: “I am the son of al-Akwa‘; today is the day of the sucklings.” Then he mentioned words to the effect that he continued reciting rajaz until he rescued the milch camels from them and seized thirty cloaks from them. He said: The Prophet ﷺ and the people came, and I said, “O Prophet of God, I have kept the people away from water while they are thirsty, so send [someone] now.” He said: “O son of al-Akwa‘, you have gained mastery, so be magnanimous.” Then we returned.
