✧ When Mu‘awiyah ؓ wanted to appoint Yazid as his successor, he sent to the governor of Madinah saying: “Send to me whoever wishes.” He said: ‘Amr b. Hazm al-Ansari came to him seeking permission. The chamberlain of Mu‘awiyah ؓ came asking permission, and said: “Here is ‘Amr, he has come seeking permission.” He said: “What has brought them to me?” He said: “O Commander of the Faithful, he seeks your favor.” Mu‘awiyah ؓ said: “If he is truthful, let him write to me, and I will give him what he asks without seeing him.” The chamberlain went out to him and said: “What is your need? Write whatever you wish.” He said: “Glory be to God! I come to the door of the Commander of the Faithful and I am veiled from him? I would love to meet him and speak to him.” Mu‘awiyah ؓ said to the chamberlain: “Promise him such and such a day; when he has prayed the morning prayer, let him come.” When Mu‘awiyah ؓ had prayed the morning prayer, he ordered his bed to be placed in the hall, then the people were excluded from him. There was no one with him except a chair placed for ‘Amr. ‘Amr ؓ came and asked permission, and he was granted permission. He greeted him, then sat on the chair. Mu‘awiyah ؓ said to him: “Your need?” He said: He praised God Almighty and extolled Him, then said: “By my life, Yazid b. Mu‘awiyah ؓ has become central in lineage among Quraysh, rich in wealth, rich except in every good. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘God Almighty does not entrust a servant with a flock but that He will question him about it on the Day of Resurrection: what did he do?’ I remind you of God, O Mu‘awiyah, regarding the community of Muhammad ﷺ, whom you will appoint over it.” He said: Mu‘awiyah ؓ was seized with shortness of breath in a cold morning until he sweated, and he kept wiping the sweat from his face for a long time. Then he recovered, praised God Almighty and extolled Him, then said: “To proceed: You are a sincere man. You have spoken according to your opinion, as far as it goes. There remains none but my son and their sons, and my son is more entitled than their sons. Your need?” He said: “I have no need.” He said: “Rise.” His brother said to him: “We came from Madinah, striking its livers for the sake of some words.” He said: “You came only for the words.” So he ordered their gifts, and he ordered for ‘Amr double their amount.”
