✧ I witnessed ‘Ali ؓ when he stopped at Karbala’. He went and stood in one place, gestured with his hand, and said: “The place where their mounts kneel is in front of him, and the place where their saddles are is to his left.” He ؓ struck the ground with his hand, took a handful of earth and smelled it, and said: “Alas! How beloved are the bloods that will be shed in it.” Then al-Husayn ؓ came and stopped at Karbala’. Al-Dabbi said: “I was among the cavalry that Ibn Ziyad sent against al-Husayn ؓ. When I arrived, it was as if I saw the spot where ‘Ali ؓ had stood and gestured with his hand. I turned my horse around, then went to al-Husayn b. ‘Ali ؓ, greeted him, and said to him: ‘Your father ؓ was the most knowledgeable of people. I witnessed him at such and such a time say such and such. By God, you will surely be killed this very hour.’ He said: ‘What do you intend to do? Will you join us or join your family?’ I said: ‘By God, I have a debt, and I have a family, and I think I will only join my family.’ He said: ‘Then take from this wealth what you need’ — and there was wealth placed before him — ‘before it becomes forbidden to you. Then escape, for by God, no one will hear the caller, and no one will see the lightning flash, and no one will cause us hardship, but he will be cursed upon the tongue of Muhammad ﷺ.’ I said: ‘By God, today I will not combine two things: taking your wealth and forsaking you.’ He turned and left him.”
