✧ I went out with my father to Yanbu‘ to visit ‘Ali ؓ, who was ill there. My father said to him: “What keeps you in this place? If you were to die here, none would take charge of you except the Bedouins of Juhaynah. Let yourself be carried to Madinah, for if your appointed time comes, your companions will attend to you and pray over you” — and Abu Fadalah ؓ was one of the people of Badr. ‘Ali ؓ said to him: “I will not die from this illness of mine. The Messenger of God ﷺ promised me that I would not die until I am appointed as commander, and then this” — meaning his beard — “will be dyed from the blood of this” — meaning the top of his head. Abu Fadalah ؓ was killed at Siffin.
