✧ The killing of Ammar ᴿᴬ at Siffin and his statement ﷺ 'Ammar will be killed by the transgressing party'

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا صَالِحُ بْنُ حَاتِمِ بْنِ وَرْدَانَ، ثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي سَعْدٍ، قَالَ:

كُنْتُ وَاقِفًا بِصِفِّينَ إِلَى جَنْبِ الْأَحْنَفِ ؓ، وَالْأَحْنَفُ إِلَى جَنْبِ عَمَّارٍ ؓ، فَسَمِعْتُ عَمَّارًا ؓ، يَقُولُ: عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ خَلِيلِي ﷺ أَنَّ آخِرَ زَادِي مِنَ الدُّنْيَا ضَيْحَةُ لَبَنٍ، قَالَ: فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ سَطَعَ الْغُبَارُ، وَقَالُوا: جَاءَ أَهْلُ الشَّامِ وَقَامَتِ السُّقَاةُ يَسْقُونَ النَّاسَ، فَجَاءَتْهُ جَارِيَةٌ مَعَهَا قَدَحُ لَبَنٍ، فَنَاوَلَتْهُ عَمَّارًا ؓ فَشَرِبَهُ، ثُمَّ نَاوَلَ عَمَّارٌ ؓ فَضْلَهُ الْأَحْنَفَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ ؓ، ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِي الْأَحْنَفُ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنْ كَانَ صَاحِبُكَ صَادِقًا، فَخَلِيقٌ أَنْ يُقْتَلَ الْآنَ، قَالَ: فَغَشِيَنَا الْقَوْمُ، فَتَقَدَّمَ عَمَّارٌ ؓ فَسَمِعْتُهُ، يَقُولُ: الْجَنَّةُ تَحْتَ الْأَسِنَّةِ الْيَوْمَ أَلْقَى الْأَحِبَّةَ مُحَمَّدًا وَحِزْبَهُ ثُمَّ كَانَ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ بِهِ ؓ

✧ I was standing at Siffin next to al-Ahnaf ؓ, and al-Ahnaf was next to Ammar ؓ. I heard Ammar ؓ say: 'My close friend ﷺ made a covenant with me that the last of my provisions from this world would be a drink of milk mixed with water.' He said: 'While we were like that, dust rose and they said: "The people of Syria have come." The water carriers stood up to give water to the people. A slave girl came to him with a bowl of milk and handed it to Ammar ؓ. He drank it. Then Ammar ؓ handed the remainder to al-Ahnaf b. Qays ؓ. Then al-Ahnaf handed it to me. I said: 'If your companion is truthful, then it is fitting that he be killed now.' He said: 'The people surrounded us. Ammar ؓ advanced, and I heard him say: "Paradise is under the spears today. I meet the beloved ones, Muhammad and his party." Then that was the last we saw of him ؓ.
