✧ Umm Abdullah bt. Munabbih b. al-Hajjaj used to be kind to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came to her one day and said: 'How are you, O Umm Abdullah?' She said: 'Fine. How are you, may my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Fine.' He ﷺ said: 'How is Abdullah?' She said: 'Fine.' Abdullah was a man who had renounced the world. His father said to him on the day of Siffin: 'Go out and fight.' He said: 'O my father, how can you order me to fight when you know what was in the covenant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, do you know that the last thing in the covenant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was that he took your hand and placed it in mine and said: "Obey Amr b. al-As"?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I order you to fight.' So he went out and fought. When the battle began, Amr ؓ started reciting: 'The war blazed, and I prepared for it a horse with a high withers, well-watered in the back, connecting charge with charge, and when the horses leapt from the charge, they stirred. A sturdy one, whose chest cavity was broad, and when it leapt from the water, it splashed.' And Amr ؓ also said: 'If Jamal had witnessed my stand and my presence at Siffin, a day when its forelocks turned gray, the evening the people of Iraq came like spring clouds raised by the winds, and we came to them in ranks, as if our swords were a tide from the sea with waves piling up. When I said they had fled swiftly, battalions of them appeared to us, and battalions swayed. Our mill turned and their mill turned through the height of the day, until the shoulders turned away. They said to us: We think you should pledge allegiance to Ali. We said: Rather we think we should strike.'
