✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, and he sent with me a man from the Ansar after Khubayb and his companions ؓ were killed. He said: 'Kill Abu Sufyan in his courtyard.' I went out with my companion until we reached the bottom of Ya'jaj from the direction of the mountain pass. He said: 'My companion was a simple man, with no travel experience. I said to him: 'If you fear anything, go to your camel and ride it until you catch up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said: 'My companion said to me: 'Would you like to circumambulate the House?' I said: 'I know the people of Makkah better: when it gets dark, they sprinkle their courtyards and sit in them, and I am more recognizable among them than a piebald horse.' He kept at me until we circumambulated seven times. Then we went out and passed by their gatherings. They said: 'This is 'Amr; by Allah, he has not come with good.' And 'Amr ؓ was a daring man called al-Khali' (the outcast). He said: 'We hastened until we climbed the mountain, and I entered a cave. There was 'Uthman b. Malik, or 'Ubayd Allah b. Malik al-Taymi, cutting grass for a horse. When he approached the cave, I said to my companion: 'By Allah, if this man sees us, he will surely point us out.' He said: 'I went out to him and stabbed him with the dagger under his breast, and I gave him the fatal blow. He screamed a scream that the people of Makkah heard.' He said: 'They came, and I returned to my place and entered it. The people of Makkah came and found him with a spark of life. They said: 'Who stabbed you?' He said: ''Amr b. Umayyah.' Then he died before they could get from him any information about our location.' He said: 'Then we went out, and there was Khubayb on his wooden cross. My companion said to me: 'Would you like to take Khubayb down from his cross and bury him?' I said: 'Yes. Move away from me, and if I am delayed, take the road.' I went to Khubayb and took him down from his cross, and carried him on my back. I had not walked with him twenty cubits before the guards surprised me; they had placed guards over him. He said: 'I dropped him, and I will never forget the thud of his body on the ground when I dropped him. Then I took to the yellow mountains until I descended to al-'Alil, the 'Alil of Dajnan, while they were pursuing me. I entered a cave,' and he mentioned the story of the one he killed. 'Then I came out of the cave to lands I knew well. Then I took to a riding camel, and I saw two men whom Quraysh had sent to spy out the news. I said to one of them: 'Surrender as a prisoner.' He refused, so I shot him and killed him, and the other surrendered. I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
