✧ Abu Bakr, whenever he mentioned the day of Uhud, would say: That day was all Talhah's day. Then he began to narrate, saying: I was the first to return to the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of Uhud. I saw a man fighting alongside the Messenger of God ﷺ in his defense—I think he was protecting him. I said: Would that I were Talhah, since I missed what I missed. I said: Let it be a man from my own people, more beloved to me. Between me and the east there was a man I did not recognize, and I was closer to the Messenger of God ﷺ than he was, yet he was moving swiftly in a way I could not match. Then it turned out he was Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah. I reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and his front tooth had been broken, he had been wounded in the face, and two rings of the helmet had pierced into his cheeks. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Attend to your companion—meaning Talhah—for he has bled profusely. But we paid no attention to his words. I went to remove that from his face, but Abu Ubaydah said: I adjure you by my right to leave me. So he left him, and he disliked touching it with his hand lest he hurt the Prophet ﷺ. He bit down on it with his mouth and extracted one of the rings, and his front tooth fell out with the ring. I went to do the same as he had done, but he said: I adjure you by my right to leave me. So he did as he had done the first time, and his other front tooth fell out with the ring. Thus Abu Ubaydah became one of the most handsome of people in losing his front teeth. We attended to the Prophet ﷺ, then we went to Talhah in one of the pits. He had seventy-some, or fewer or more, wounds from stabs, strikes, and arrows, and his finger had been cut off. We attended to him.
