✧ I was among the first to return on the day of Uhud, and in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ there was a man fighting on his behalf—and I think he said protecting him. He said: I said, "Would that you were Talha, since what passed me by has passed me by." He said: Between me and the east was a man I did not recognize, and I was closer to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than he, yet he was rushing forward swiftly in a way I could not. Then behold, it was Abu Ubaidah b. al-Jarrah. We both reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ together, and his front tooth had been broken and he had been wounded in the face, and two rings of the helmet had entered his cheeks. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, "Attend to your companion," meaning Talha, who had bled profusely, and he did not look at him. So we turned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I wanted what Abu Ubaidah wanted, but he asked me to let him, and he did not cease until I left him. One of the rings had become stuck, and he disliked to shake it with his hand lest he hurt the Prophet ﷺ, so he gripped it with his front tooth, rose up, and pulled it out, and his front tooth fell out. Then he asked me, and did not let me, until I left him. Then he turned to the other ring and did the same, pulling it out, and his other front tooth fell out. Thus Abu Ubaidah became the most broken-toothed of men.
