✧ By Allah, drowsiness was overcoming me when I heard Ibn Qushayr saying it, and I could not hear it from him except as in a dream. Then he recited: "Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah has pardoned them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing." He said: Those who turned back when the people fled were 'Uthman b. 'Affan, Sa'id b. 'Uthman al-Zuraqi, and his brother 'Uqbah b. 'Uthman, until they reached a mountain near Madinah called al-Hajib in the valley of al-A'was. They stayed there for three days. They claimed that when they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: You went far in it. Then he said: "O you who believe, do not be like those who disbelieved" - meaning the hypocrites - "and said to their brothers when they traveled in the land or were on an expedition, 'If they had been with us, they would not have died or been killed,' so that Allah makes that a cause of regret in their hearts." He said: seeking and regretting, and that will not avail them anything. Then the story continued with what He commands His Prophet ﷺ and entrusts to him, until he reached His saying: "And when a disaster struck you, although you had struck them with twice as much, you said, 'How is this?' Say, 'It is from yourselves'" - that which came from the archers. He said: And "What struck you on the day the two armies met was by Allah's permission, and that He might know the believers" - meaning the openness of their affair and that their matter be manifest - "and that He might know the hypocrites" - so their affair would be open; meaning 'Abdullah b. Ubayy and those with him who turned back from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he marched to his enemy. And it was said to them: "Come, fight in the way of Allah or defend." They said: "If we knew there would be fighting, we would follow you." That was their saying when the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them while they were marching to Uhud, when they turned away from them: Will you abandon us and hand us over to our enemy? They said: We do not think there will be fighting. If we thought there would be fighting, we would follow you. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: "They were closer that day to disbelief than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts, and Allah is most knowing of what they conceal" - those who said to their brothers from their kin, not meaning their brothers in religion, "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: "Say, 'Then avert death from yourselves, if you are truthful.'"
