✧ A man from Banu Zuhra met Umar ؓ before he had accepted Islam, while Umar was carrying a sword. He said, “Where are you heading, O Umar?” Umar said, “I want to kill Muhammad.” He said, “How can you be safe among Banu Hashim or Banu Zuhra if you have killed Muhammad?” Umar said, “I see that you have turned apostate and left your religion.” He said, “Shall I tell you something astonishing, O Umar? Your brother-in-law and your sister have turned apostate and left the religion they were upon.” He said, “So Umar went to them angrily.” Ishaq said, “Meaning in a rage,” until he approached the door, and with them was a man called Khabbab, reciting Surah Ta-Ha to them. He said, “When Khabbab ؓ heard Umar’s footsteps, he hid under a bed of theirs.” Umar said, “What is this murmuring I hear with you?” They said, “We were just talking between ourselves.” He said, “Perhaps you have apostatized and left your religion.” His brother-in-law said, “O Umar, what do you think if the truth is in a religion other than yours?” He said, “Umar turned to his brother-in-law and trampled him severely.” He said, “His sister pushed him away from her husband, so he struck her face and made it bleed.” She said, “What do you think if the truth is in a religion other than yours? I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.” He said, “Umar ؓ said, ‘Show me this book that you were reciting.’” He said, “Umar ؓ could read books.” His sister said, “No, you are impure. Give us a covenant by Allah Almighty that you will return it to us, and get up and perform ghusl and wudu.” He said, “So he did.” He said, “He recited: ‘Ta-Ha. We have not sent down to you the Qur’an that you be distressed’ until His saying: ‘And establish prayer for My remembrance. Indeed, the Hour is coming; I almost conceal it.’” Umar ؓ said, “Show me where Muhammad is.” When Khabbab ؓ heard Umar’s ؓ words, he came out to him and said, “Rejoice, O Umar, for I hope that you are the answer to the supplication of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on Thursday evening: ‘O Allah, strengthen the religion with Umar b. al-Khattab or with Amr b. Hisham.’” They said, “He is in the house at the foot of al-Safa,” meaning the Prophet ﷺ, “receiving revelation.” So Umar ؓ went, and at the door were Hamza b. Abd al-Muttalib ؓ and some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. When Hamza ؓ saw the people’s fear of Umar ؓ, he said, “Yes, this is Umar. If Allah intends good for him, he will accept Islam and follow the Prophet ﷺ, and if it is otherwise, his killing will be easy for us.” He said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to him and grabbed the collar of his garment and his sword strap, and said, ‘Will you not stop, O Umar, until Allah Almighty sends upon you disgrace and punishment like what He sent upon al-Walid b. al-Mughira? O Allah, this is Umar b. al-Khattab. O Allah, strengthen the religion with Umar.’” Umar ؓ said, “I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah,” and he accepted Islam. Then he ؓ said, “Come out, O Messenger of Allah.”
