✧ Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas ؓ was among a group, and they mentioned Ali ؓ and reviled him. Sa'd ؓ said: "Gently, about the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for we committed a sin along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'Had it not been for a decree from Allah that had preceded, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took.' I hope that a mercy from Allah, Exalted, preceded for us." One of them said: "By Allah, he hates you and calls you 'al-Ukhaynis.'" Sa'd ؓ laughed until laughter overcame him, then said: "Does not a man feel anger toward his brother over a matter between them, yet that does not reach his trustworthiness?" And he mentioned another word.
