✧ Virtue of al-Bara' b. Malik ᴿᴬ

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ؓ قَالَ:

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ؓ وَهُوَ مُسْتَلْقٍ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ، وَهُوَ يُنْشِدُ أَبْيَاتًا مِنَ الشِّعْرِ، كَأَنَّهُ يَتَغَنَّى بِهِنَّ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: رَحِمَكَ اللهُ، قَدْ أَبْدَلَكَ اللهُ بِهِ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ، الْقُرْآنُ. فَقَالَ: أَتَرْهَبُ أَنْ أَمُوتَ عَلَى فِرَاشِي ! لَا وَاللهِ، مَا كَانَ اللهُ لِيَحْرِمَنِي ذَلِكَ وَقَدْ قَتَلْتُ مِائَةً مُنْفَرِدًا سِوَى مَنْ شَارَكْتُ فِي ذَلِكَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

Translation

✧ I entered upon al-Bara' ibn Malik ؓ while he was lying on his bed, reciting some verses of poetry as if singing them. I said to him: "May Allah have mercy on you. Allah has given you something better than this: the Quran." He said: "Do you fear that I might die on my bed? No, by Allah! Allah would not deprive me of that, for I have killed a hundred men in single combat, besides those I fought alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
