✧ I went out seeking my stray camels, and I took with me milk in a leather water-skin. Then I said to myself: "I have not been fair. Where is the water for ablution?" So I poured out the milk and filled it with water. I said: "This is for ablution, and this is for drinking." I kept seeking my camels. Whenever I wanted to perform ablution, I poured water from the skin and performed ablution, and whenever I wanted to drink, I poured milk and drank it. I continued like that for three days. Asma' al-Bahraniyyah said to him: "O Abu Ka'b, was it a skin or a milk-skin?" He said: "You are indeed idle. Rather, it protected from hunger and quenched thirst. Indeed, I narrated this hadith to a group of my people, among them Ali ibn al-Harith, the chief of Banu Qiyan. He said: 'I do not think what you say is as you said.' I said: 'Allah knows best about that.' Then I returned to my dwelling and slept that night. At dawn prayer, he was at my door. I said: 'May Allah have mercy on you. Why did you trouble yourself to come to me? Could you not have sent for me and I would come to you?' He said: 'I am more entitled to come to you. No sooner did I sleep last night than someone came to me and said: "You are the one who denies the one who narrates the blessings of Allah, the Exalted."' Then I went out until I came to Madinah. I came to Uthman ibn Affan ؓ and asked him about something concerning my religion. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I am a man from Banu al-Harith from the people of Yemen. I want to ask you about some matters, so instruct your doorkeeper not to bar me." He ؓ said: "O Waththab, when the Harithi comes, permit him." So whenever I came, I knocked on the door. He said: "Who is this?" I said: "The Harithi." He said: "Enter." I entered, and Uthman ؓ was sitting with a group of silent men around him who did not speak, as if birds were on their heads. I greeted and sat down, but I did not ask him about anything because of what I saw of their state.
