✧ I went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a hot day from the days of Makkah, and he was riding behind me, to a stone idol among the idols. We had slaughtered a sheep for it and cooked it. He said: Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl met him, and each greeted the other with the greeting of the Age of Ignorance. The Prophet ﷺ said: “O Zayd, why do I see your people have turned against you?” He said: “By God, O Muḥammad, that is not for any harm they have from me. But I went out seeking this religion, until I came to the rabbis of Fadak. I found them worshipping God and associating partners with Him. I said: ‘This is not what I seek.’ An old man among them said: ‘You ask about a religion that we do not know anyone worships God by except an old man in al-Ḥīrah.’ So I went out until I came to him. When he saw me, he said: ‘Who are you from?’ I said: ‘From the people of the House of God, from the people of thorns and acacia.’ He said: ‘The one you seek has appeared in your land. A prophet has been sent whose star has risen, and all whom you see are in error.’ I did not sense anything after that, O Muḥammad.” He said: So he brought the food near to him, and he said: “What is this?” He said: “A sheep we slaughtered for a stone idol.” He ﷺ said: “I would not eat from what the name of God has not been mentioned over.” Zayd b. Ḥārithah ؓ said: The Prophet ﷺ came to the House and circumambulated it, and I was with him, and [he went between] al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah. At al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah there were two idols of brass, one called Isāf and the other Nāʾilah. The polytheists, when they circumambulated, would rub themselves against them. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not rub them, for they are filth.” I said to myself: I will rub them to see what the Prophet ﷺ says. So I rubbed them, and he ﷺ said: “O Zayd, were you not forbidden?” Zayd b. ʿAmr died, and revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to Zayd: “He will be raised as a nation alone.”
