✧ I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he had me riding behind him on a hot day from the days of Makkah. With us was a sheep that we had slaughtered and prepared, and we put it in a traveling bag. Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl met him, and each of them greeted the other with the greeting of the Jahiliyyah. The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Zayd—meaning Zayd b. ʿAmr—why do I see your people have turned against you?" He said, "By Allah, O Muhammad, that is not because of any fault of mine toward them. But I went out seeking this religion until I came to the Jewish scholars of Khaybar, and I found them worshipping Allah yet associating partners with Him. I said, 'This is not the religion I seek.' Then I went on until I came to the scholars of Syria, and I found them worshipping Allah yet associating partners with Him. I said, 'This is not the religion I seek.' One of their men said, 'You are asking about a religion of which we know no one worshipping Allah by it except an old man in the Jazirah.' So I went out until I came to him. When he saw me, he said, 'Indeed, all those you have seen are in error. From where are you?' I said, 'I am from the people of the House of Allah, from the people of shirk and qaraz.' He said, 'Indeed, the one you seek has appeared in your land. A Prophet has been sent, whose star has risen.' And I have not perceived anything after that, O Muhammad." He said: Then he brought the traveling bag near to him, and he said, "What is this?" He said, "A sheep we slaughtered for one of these stone idols." He said, "I would never eat anything slaughtered for other than Allah." And they parted. Zayd b. Harithah said: The Prophet ﷺ came to the House with me, and he circumambulated it. At the House there were two idols, one of them of copper, one called Yasaf and the other Naʾilah. The polytheists, when they circumambulated, would wipe themselves on them. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not wipe them, for they are filth." He said: I said to myself, 'I will certainly wipe them so that I may see what he says.' So I wiped them, and he said, "O Zayd, were you not forbidden?" He said: And revelation came down upon the Prophet ﷺ. He said: And Zayd b. ʿAmr died, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "He will be resurrected as a nation alone."
