✧ The Merits of Uthman, ᴿᴬ

وَقَالَ الْبَزَّارُ: حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، ثَنَا سَلَّامٌ أَبُو الْمُنْذِرِ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، قَالَ:

رَفَعَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ صَوْتَهُ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ؓ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ: لِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ رَفَعْتَ صَوْتَكَ وَقَدْ شَهِدْتُ بَدْرًا وَلَمْ تَشْهَدْ، وَبَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَمْ تُبَايِعْ، وَفَرَرْتَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ وَلَمْ أَفِرَّ ؟! قَالَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ: أَمَّا قَوْلُكَ: " إِنَّكَ شَهِدْتَ بَدْرًا وَلَمْ أَشْهَدْ " فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَلَّفَنِي عَلَى بِنْتِهِ، وَضَرَبَ لِي بِسَهْمٍ، وَأَعْطَانِي أَجْرِي، وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ: " بَايَعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَمْ أُبَايِعْ " فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَنِي إِلَى نَاسٍ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، وَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ ذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا احْتُبِسْتُ ضَرَبَ ﷺ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ، فَقَالَ: " هَذِهِ لِعُثْمَانَ "، وَشِمَالُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرٌ مِنْ يَمِينِي، وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ: " فَرَرْتَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ وَلَمْ أَفِرَّ " فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا مِنْكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ.. الْآيَةَ، فَلِمَ تُعَيِّرُنِي بِذَنْبٍ قَدْ عَفَا اللهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ ؟!

✧ Uthman ؓ raised his voice at Abd al-Rahman b. Awf ؓ, and Abd al-Rahman b. Awf said to him: "For what reason did you raise your voice, when I witnessed Badr and you did not, and I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ and you did not, and I did not flee on the day of Uhud while you fled?!" Uthman ؓ said: "As for your saying that you witnessed Badr and I did not, the Messenger of God ﷺ left me behind with his daughter, and he allotted me a share, and gave me my reward. As for your saying that you pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ and I did not, the Messenger of God ﷺ sent me to some people among the polytheists, and you know that. When I was detained, he ﷺ struck his right hand on his left and said: 'This is for Uthman.' And the left hand of the Messenger of God ﷺ is better than my right hand. As for your saying that I fled on the day of Uhud and you did not flee, God Almighty said: 'Those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met...' [the verse]. So why do you reproach me for a sin from which God Almighty has pardoned [me]?!"
