✧ Abd al-Rahman b. Awf ؓ met al-Walid b. Uqba ؓ, and al-Walid said to him: "Why do I see that you have become distant from the Commander of the Faithful Uthman ؓ?" He said: "Convey to him from me that I did not flee on the day of Aynayn—Asim said: it is the day of Uhud—and I did not stay behind from Badr, and I did not abandon the sunna of Umar ؓ." He went to inform Uthman of that, and Uthman ؓ said: "As for his saying 'the day of Aynayn,' how can he reproach me for a sin from which God Almighty has pardoned [me]? He, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'Those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met...' [the verse]. As for his saying 'I stayed behind on the day of Badr,' I was nursing Ruqayya, the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, until she died, and he allotted me a share, and whoever the Messenger of God ﷺ allotted a share has indeed participated. As for his saying 'I abandon the sunna of Umar ؓ,' I am not able to bear it, neither I nor he." So I came to him and narrated that to him.
