✧ The Merits of Uthman, ᴿᴬ

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ، ثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، قَالَ:

إِنَّ رَجُلًا بِالْكُوفَةِ شَهِدَ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ ؓ قُتِلَ شَهِيدًا، فَأَخَذَتْهُ الزَّبَانِيَةُ فَرَفَعُوهُ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ ؓ وَقَالُوا: لَوْلَا أَنْ تَنْهَانَا أَوْ نَهَيْتَنَا أَنْ نَقْتُلَ أَحَدًا قَتَلْنَاهُ، يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ يَشْهَدُ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ ؓ شَهِيدٌ. فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ: وَأَنْتَ تَشْهَدُ أَوْ تَذْكُرُ أَنِّي أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي، وَأَتَيْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي

Translation

✧ A man in Kufa testified that Uthman ؓ was killed as a martyr, so the zabaniya seized him and brought him to Ali ؓ, and they said: "Were it not that you forbade us—or you forbade us—from killing anyone, we would have killed him. He claims to testify that Uthman ؓ is a martyr." The man said to Ali ؓ: "And you testify—or you remember—that I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and he gave me, and I came to Abu Bakr ؓ and asked him and he gave me."
