✧ Al-Mughira ibn Shuba gave a sermon and spoke against Ali, so Saeed ibn Zayd came out and said: Do you not marvel at this? He is insulting Ali! I bear witness about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that we were on Hira or Uhud, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Be still, Hira or Uhud, for upon you are only a truthful one or a martyr." Then the Prophet ﷺ named the ten. He named Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talha, Zubayr, Saad, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, and he named himself, Saeed.

machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. Ẓālim, from Saʿīd b. Zayd, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning the virtues of the ten and that they are in Paradise. He said: Hilāl b. Yasāf narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated it from Hilāl, from ʿAbdullāh b. Ẓālim, from Saʿīd b. Zayd. A group narrated it from Ḥuṣayn, among them Zāʾidah, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, Hushaym, Abū Ḥafṣ al-Abbār, Jarīr, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Warqāʾ and ʿAlī b. ʿĀṣim, and they agreed on Ḥuṣayn. Al-Thawrī narrated it from Ḥuṣayn and from Manṣūr, from Hilāl b. Yasāf, from Saʿīd b. Zayd, and Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ said the same, except that he said: from al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Hilāl, from Saʿīd b. Zayd, and he said: Ḥuṣayn said, from Ibn Ẓālim. The companions of al-Thawrī disagreed with him. As for Abū Ḥudhayfah, he narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Hilāl, from Ibn Ẓālim, from Saʿīd, and added to its text a man whom no one else mentioned, making him one of the ten promised Paradise: he is ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd. Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Hilāl, from a man he did not name, from Saʿīd b. Zayd. Al-Qāsim b. Yazīd al-Jarmī and Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Hilāl b. Yasāf, from Ḥayyān b. Ghālib, from Saʿīd b. Zayd. ʿUbayd b. Saʿīd al-Umawī, al-Firyābī and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abān narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Hilāl, from so-and-so b. Ḥayyān, from ʿAbdullāh b. Ẓālim, from Saʿīd b. Zayd. Qabīṣah said, from al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Hilāl, from Saʿīd b. Zayd, as Wakīʿ said. Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif and al-ʿAwwām b. Ḥawshab narrated this hadith from Hilāl, from Saʿīd b. Zayd, without mentioning anyone between them. In our view, the correct version is the statement of those who narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Hilāl, from so-and-so b. Ḥayyān or Ḥayyān b. so-and-so, from ʿAbdullāh b. Ẓālim, because Manṣūr is one of the reliable authorities (athbāt), and in his narration from Hilāl he made clear that Hilāl did not hear it from Ibn Ẓālim and that there was a man between them. The statement of Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif, al-ʿAwwām b. Ḥawshab and those who followed them, from Hilāl, is mursal.
