✧ Umar ؓ sent for me, so I came to him. When I reached the door, I heard his sobbing. I said: Has the Commander of the Faithful been afflicted? I entered and took hold of his shoulder and said: No harm, no harm, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: Rather, the severest harm. Then he took my hand and brought me inside, and there were bags piled one on top of another. He said: Now the family of al-Khattab has become insignificant before Allah, the Exalted. If Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, had willed, He would have given this to my two companions—meaning the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr ؓ—and He would have established for me a practice in it that I could follow. I said: Sit with us and let us think. Sit with us and let us think. So we assigned four thousand to each of the Mothers of the Believers ؓ, and we assigned four thousand to each of the Muhajirun, and two thousand to each of the rest of the people.
