✧ You will certainly attain your need, but he refused. When he feared that he would be delayed, he struck him lightly with the whip, then went on and prayed the morning prayer with them. When he finished, he ﷺ turned to face the people - and when he did that, they knew something had happened - and the people gathered around him. He ﷺ said, 'Where is the one I struck just now?' He repeated, 'If he is among the people, let him stand up.' The man began to say, 'I seek refuge in Allah and then in His Messenger,' and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying, 'Come closer, come closer,' until he came close to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat before him and handed him the whip, saying, 'Take your whip and retaliate.' The man said, 'I seek refuge in Allah from striking His Prophet.' He ﷺ said, 'Take your whip, there is no harm upon you.' He said, 'I seek refuge in Allah from striking His Prophet.' He ﷺ said, 'Unless you forgive.' He said: So he threw down the whip and said, 'I have forgiven, O Messenger of Allah.' Then Abu Dharr stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, do you remember the night of al-Aqabah? I was driving you while you were asleep, and whenever I slowed down or took hold of its halter, it turned aside, so I struck you lightly with the whip. I said, 'The people have come to you,' and you said, 'No harm upon you. Take, O Messenger of Allah, and retaliate.' He ﷺ said, 'I have forgiven.' He said, 'Retaliate, for it is dearer to me.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck him, and he said: I saw him writhing from it. Then he ﷺ said, 'O people, fear Allah. By Allah, no believer wrongs another believer except that Allah, the Exalted, will exact retribution for him on the Day of Resurrection.'
