قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ: حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، ثَنَا مِنْدَلٌ، عَنِ الْكَلْبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ - ؓ قَالَ:

أَسْلَمَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ، وَتَأَخَّرَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ فِي الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَأَنْزَلَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: وَلا تُمْسِكُوا بِعِصَمِ الْكَوَافِرِ - يَقُولُ: إِنْ أَسْلَمَ رَجُلٌ وَأَبَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ، فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ إِنْ شَاءَ أَرْبَعًا سِوَاهَا

Translation

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ embraced Islam, while his wife remained behind among the polytheists. So the Mighty and Majestic revealed: 'And do not hold on to the bonds of disbelieving women'—meaning: if a man embraces Islam and his wife refuses, then he may marry, if he wishes, up to four other women.
