وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، ثَنَا حَفْصٌ، ثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ؓ قَالَ:

رَخَّصَ لَهُمْ فِي قَطْعِ النَّخْلِ، ثُمَّ شَدَّدَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَأَتَوُا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، عَلَيْنَا إِثْمٌ فِيمَا قَطَعْنَا، أَوْ فِيمَا تَرَكْنَا ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: مَا قَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ لِينَةٍ أَوْ تَرَكْتُمُوهَا قَائِمَةً عَلَى أُصُولِهَا فَبِإِذْنِ اللهِ

Translation

✧ He permitted them to cut down the palm trees, then he made it difficult for them. They came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, is there a sin upon us for what we cut down, or for what we left? So God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'Whatever palm trees you cut down or left standing on their roots, it was by God's permission.'
