✧ Regarding the words of God, Mighty and Majestic: “Whatever you cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their roots, it was by God’s permission” [Q 59:5], he said: “Al-līnah is the date palm.” “And so that He might disgrace the transgressors” [Q 59:5] – he said: “They brought them down from their fortresses and were commanded to cut the palm trees, and that caused unease in their hearts. The Muslims said: ‘We cut some and left some. We must ask the Messenger of God ﷺ: will we have a reward for what we cut, and will we bear a burden of sin for what we left?’ So God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: ‘Whatever you cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their roots, it was by God’s permission, and so that He might disgrace the transgressors.’”
