✧ When the word of God, Mighty and Majestic, was revealed: "And warn your closest kindred" – the Messenger of God ﷺ cried out on [Mount] Abu Qubays: "O Banu 'Abd Manaf! Indeed I am a warner." Quraysh came to him, and he warned them and cautioned them. They said: "You claim that you are a prophet to whom revelation comes, and that Solomon (peace and blessings be upon him) had the wind and the mountains subjugated to him, and that Moses (peace and blessings be upon him) had the sea subjugated to him, and that Jesus ﷺ used to revive the dead. So call upon God, Exalted is He, to move these mountains away from us, and to make rivers gush forth for us so that we may make them into fords and cultivate and eat; or else call upon God, Mighty and Majestic, to revive for us our dead so that we may speak to them and they may speak to us; or else call upon God, Exalted is He, to turn this rock beneath you into gold for us, so that we may carve from it and it may suffice us from the winter and summer journey. For you claim that you are like them." While we were around him, the signs of revelation descended upon him ﷺ, and when it was lifted from him ﷺ, he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, He has given me what you asked for, and if I wished it would be so; but He, Majestic and Exalted, gave me the choice between you entering the gate of mercy so that your believers believe, and between Him leaving you to what you chose for yourselves so that you stray from the gate of mercy and none of your believers believe. I chose the gate of mercy so that your believers believe. And He informed me that if He gave you that and then you disbelieved, He would punish you with a severe punishment the like of which He had not punished anyone in the worlds." Then was revealed: "And nothing prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them" – up to three verses. And it was revealed: "And if there were a Qur'an by which mountains could be moved..." the verse.
