✧ 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ summoned a man from Banu Jumah called Sa'id b. 'Amir b. Hidhyam and said to him: "I am appointing you over such-and-such a land." He said: "Will you excuse me, O Commander of the Faithful?" He said: "By Allah, I will not. You have placed it upon my neck and then you leave me?" 'Umar ؓ said: "Should we not assign a stipend for you?" He said: "You have already made for me in my 'ata' what suffices me without it, and more than what I want." He said: When his 'ata' came out, he would buy provisions for his family and give the rest as charity. His wife would say to him: "Where is the surplus of your 'ata'?" He would say: "I have loaned it." Then some people came to him and said: "Your family has a right over you, and your in-laws have a right over you." He said: "I am not one to prefer them over the pursuit of the maidens of Paradise. If one of the best women of Paradise were to appear, the earth would shine for her as the sun shines. And I am not one to lag behind the first emancipation after I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'People will be gathered for the reckoning, and the poor believers will come walking quickly like doves. It will be said to them: "Stop for the reckoning." They will say: "We have no reckoning and you did not give us anything." Their Lord, Mighty and Exalted, will say to them: "My servants have spoken the truth." Then a gate of Paradise will be opened for them, and they will enter it seventy years before the rest of the people.'"
