✧ I went out on a cold morning from my house hungry and weak, and the cold had made me shiver. I took a worn-out hide that we had, cut a hole in it, put it around my neck, and tied it over my chest to keep warm. By Allah, there was nothing in my house to eat, and if there had been anything in the house of the Prophet ﷺ, it would have reached me. I went out to some parts of al-Madinah and looked at a Jew in a garden through a gap in his wall. He said: What is wrong with you, O Bedouin? Would you like a date for every bucket? I said: Yes, open the garden. He opened it for me, and I entered. I began drawing a bucket and he would give me a date, until when I filled my palm, I said: I have enough from you now. So I ate them, then drank from the water. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and sat with him in the mosque while he ﷺ was among a group of his companions ؓ. Suddenly Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr ؓ appeared before us wearing a patched cloak. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he remembered what he had been in of luxury, and saw his current condition, so his eyes shed tears and he wept. Then he said: "How will you be when one of you goes out in one garment in the morning and another in the evening, and your houses are veiled as the Ka'bah is veiled?" We said: We will be better that day; we will be spared the burden and will be free for worship. He ﷺ said: "You are better today than you will be on that day."
