✧ I came to Madinah seeking knowledge, and behold the people were in the mosque of the Messenger of God ﷺ in circles, circles, conversing. He said: I began to pass by the circles until I came to a circle in which there was a pale man wearing two garments, as if he had just arrived from a journey. I heard him say: 'The people of the knots have perished, by the Lord of the Ka'bah; I do not grieve for them.' He said it three times. He said: I sat with him, and he spoke about what had been decreed for him, then he stood up. When he stood up, I asked about him: 'Who is this?' They said: 'Ubayy b. Ka'b ؓ, the leader of the Muslims.' I followed him until he reached his house, and he was shabby in appearance and shabby in clothing, one part resembling another. I greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he asked me: 'From which people are you?' I said: 'From the people of Iraq.' He said ؓ: 'The most questioning of people.' When he said that, I became angry, so I knelt on my knees, faced the qiblah, raised my hands, and said: 'O God, we complain of them to You. We spend our wealth, weary our bodies, and travel our mounts seeking knowledge, but when we meet them, they frown at us and say things to us.' Ubayy ؓ wept and began to appease me, and said: 'Woe to you, go there.' Then he said: 'O God, I make a covenant with You that if You keep me alive until Friday, I will speak of what I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ and will not fear the blame of any blamer for Your sake.' Then I think he stood up. When he said that, I left him and began waiting for Friday to hear his words. He said: When it was Thursday, I went out for some of my needs, and behold the streets were crowded with people. I did not enter any street but people met me. I said: 'What is the matter with the people?' They said: 'We think you are a stranger?' I said: 'Yes.' They said: 'The leader of the Muslims, Ubayy b. Ka'b ؓ, has died.' He said: I met Abu Musa ؓ in Iraq and told him the hadith. He said: 'Alas! If only he had lived until he conveyed to us the statement of the Messenger of God ﷺ.'
