✧ I came to Madinah to learn knowledge. When I entered the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the people were in circles talking. I kept going until I reached a circle with a pale man wearing two garments as if he had arrived from a journey. I heard him say: The companions of the pact have perished, by the Lord of the Kabah, and I do not grieve for them, saying it three times. I sat with him and he talked as was decreed for him, then he stood. I asked about him. They said: This is the master of the people, Ubayy b. Kab. I followed him to his house. His house was shabby, his clothing worn, his appearance poor, all similar. I greeted him and he returned the greeting. He asked: From which people are you? I said: From Iraq. He said: The most questioning, and he became angry. I faced the qiblah, knelt on my knees, raised my hands like this, and stretched my arms. I said: O Allah, we complain about them to You. We spend our provisions, exhaust our bodies, and groom our mounts seeking knowledge. When we meet them, they frown at us and speak harshly. Ubayy wept and began to placate me, saying: Woe to you, I did not mean that. Then Ubayy said: I promise you, if I live until Friday, I will speak what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ without fearing the blame of any critic. I left him and waited for Friday. On Thursday, I went out for an errand and found the roads full of people. Whichever street I took, people met me. I asked: What is the matter? They said: We think you are a stranger. I said: Yes. They said: The master of the Muslims, Ubayy b. Kab, has died. I met Abu Musa in Iraq and told him. He said: If only he had remained until you conveyed his words to us.
