✧ I said to Ibn Umar ؓ: Which pilgrim to the House of God is best and greatest in reward? He said ؓ: One who combines three qualities: sincere intention, abundant intellect, and spending from lawful means. This was mentioned to Ibn Abbas ؓ, and he said: He spoke truth. I said: If his intention is sincere and his spending is from lawful means, what harm does the smallness of his intellect cause him? He said: O Abu al-Hajjaj, you ask me about what I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, a servant does not obey his Lord with anything—not jihad, nor any kind of piety among the kinds of what comes from him—if he does not understand it. If an ignorant person, by his intellect, surpassed the diligent in worship, what he corrupts would be more than what he sets right.
