✧ Thabit b. Qays b. Shammas missed a rak'ah of the dawn prayer, so he stood up to make it up. The Prophet ﷺ stood up and the people sat around him. When Thabit b. Qays finished the prayer, he came to a man and said: 'Make room for me,' so he made room for him. Then he came to a second and said: 'Make room for me,' so he made room for him. Then he came to a third and said: 'Make room for me,' but he said: 'Behind you there is plenty of room. Why are you stepping over people?' He looked at his face and said: 'O son of such-and-such a woman!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard it and said: 'Who is this who has reproached the man shortly before by his mother?' They were silent. Then he said a second time: 'Who is this who has reproached the man shortly before by his mother?' Thabit stood up and said: 'I missed a rak'ah, and I have deafness in my ear, so I wanted to draw near to you, and the people sat around you.' He mentioned the story. He said: 'So I reproached him for a mother who lived in the pre-Islamic era, while other women were better than her.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Thabit b. Qays, raise your head above this assembly. Among them are the black, the white, and the red. You are no better than these except through piety.'
