✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a raiding party to Ḍāḥiyat Muḍar. They camped in a desert land. When morning came, there was a tent, and in its courtyard there were sheep resting. They came to the owner of the sheep and stood before him, saying, 'Give us a sheep to slaughter.' He brought out a ewe, but they rejected it. Then he brought out another ewe, and they rejected it. He said, 'I have nothing in my flock except its ram or a recently lambed ewe.' So they took a ewe from the flock. When they moved on, they had no shade to shelter from the heat, and they were in a land with no shade. The bedouin had said that his sheep were in his shade. They said, 'We have more right to the shade than these sheep.' So they came to him and said, 'Take out your sheep that are sheltering in this shade.' He said, 'If you take out my sheep, they will fall ill and miscarry their young, and I am a man who has purified himself and submitted.' But they took out his sheep, and within just an hour they became feverish and miscarried their young. The bedouin hurried off until he reached Madinah and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, telling him what had been done to him. He became very angry at that, then he seated him until the people arrived. He asked them, and they said, 'He lied.' So some of the anger left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The bedouin said, 'By the One by whom I swear, I hope that Allah will inform you of my news and their news.' It occurred to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he was truthful. He then took each of them aside one by one. When he had taken one of them aside and adjured him by Allah, the Exalted, to tell him as the bedouin had told him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said: 'O people, do not let yourselves follow one another in lying as moths follow one another into the fire. All lying is written against the son of Adam except three traits: a man who lies to his wife to please her...'
