✧ When Abu Bakr ؓ was appointed as caliph, he sat in his house sorrowful. Umar ؓ entered upon him and began to reproach him, saying: "You have burdened me with this matter," and he complained to him about judging between the people. Umar ؓ said to him: "Do you not know that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'If a governor exercises ijtihad and reaches the truth, he gets two rewards; and if he exercises ijtihad and errs from the truth, he gets one reward'?" It was as if Umar's ؓ hadith made it easy for Abu Bakr.
